Best tips to stop your clear braces from turning yellow

When it comes to clear braces, you’ll want them to look their best – because when they’re transparent, they’re much harder to spot on your teeth, and treatment can be much more discreet. Today, we’ll look at the causes of yellowing braces, how to prevent it from happening, and other top tips for your treatment.

What makes adult braces go yellow?

Yellowing of your clear braces can happen for a range of reasons, but the most likely are that you’ve either eaten or drunk something while wearing them, or you smoke. Clear braces, like Invisalign, aren’t designed to be worn while having snacks and meals, and smoking isn’t a good idea, either. Another key cause of yellow braces is not cleaning them – or your smile – properly.

How can I stop my braces from going yellow?

We’d suggest the following:

1. Quit smoking or vaping

We may be able to signpost you to some support services if you need help with this.

2. Remove your braces when eating and chewing

This includes meals, snacks, drinks (other than water) and even gum.

3. Brush and floss your teeth twice a day, for two minutes each time

This helps remove any food and bacteria, preventing the build-up of plaque that can give teeth (or clear braces) a yellowy appearance.

4. Clean your adult clear braces regularly

Invisalign has a cleaning solution designed for doing just that, and you should get into the habit of rinsing them on removal and reinsertion into your mouth.

Can I replace my adult braces?

Yes, you can order replacement Invisalign aligners, however this will come with a cost and could impact your treatment, for instance causing delays or prolonging the overall treatment time.

What about storing clear braces?

That’s a great question. We’d recommend storing in an Invisalign case when you remove your adult braces, to prevent exposure to bacteria in the air and to prevent loss, breakage or theft.

Can I brush clear braces?

You could use a soft-bristled toothbrush to dislodge food particles, yes – but it’s not advisable to use any cleaning chemicals or toothpastes. These could warp or damage your adult braces, and it’s not a good idea for some of these to come into contact with the delicate tissues of your mouth, teeth and gums.
